There was a lot of hype in the lead-up to the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, but since the two devices launched earlier this year, a number of issues have come to light. Most concern the larger of the two phones, the Pixel 2 XL, and range from poor viewing angles and crackling speakers to missing operating systems. Unfortunately, there’s more where those came from: Some Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL owners are reporting visual banding on photos and videos taken under LED lighting.
On Google’s Pixel Phone Help forum, some folks have observed an odd banding effect on photos and videos. When recording a video or using the Motion Photo feature, bands inexplicably scroll across the image.
Google support forum member Chazzdjr reported the issue in late October, but it’s started to pick up steam lately. I’ve embedded a number of example photos, and you can check out a full album of the effect in action.
It might be the result of the way LED lights draw power, forum user cybersulu speculates. They flicker imperceptibly at the rate of the AC power supply, which causes a banding effect. Counteracting the banding requires setting the shutter speed to multiples of the light source’s frequency.
A forum contributor says the issue has been escalated and that the Pixel team is aware of it, but Google hasn’t responded yet. Whatever the cause, here’s hoping the search giant’s engineers find a fix soon.
