Razer Phone Now Supports Netflix Content in HDR and 5.1 Surround Sound

Some content on Netflix take advantage of high dynamic range (HDR) and 5.1 surround sound, but not all devices support those technologies. Luckily, that began to change last year, when smartphone manufacturers like Samsung and LG put out smartphones with HDR compatibility. And today at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, Razer and Netflix jointly announced that the Razer Phone will start showing Netflix content in HDR and 5.1 surround sound later this year.

“We engineered the Razer Phone to handle HDR video and sound like no other phone on the market,” said Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and CEO. “We are incredibly excited to deliver Netflix entertainment on a smartphone like never before, enabling us to take full measure of the Razer Phone’s HDR10-enabled display and dual-firing, front-facing Dolby-optimized speakers and THX-certified headphone connectivity.”

When the Razer Phone was announced in late 2017, Razer made sure to highlight its unique 120Hz display and dual front-facing, amp-boosted speakers. It won’t be the first smartphone to support HDR content on Netflix, but it will be the first to support both HDR and 5.1 surround sound.

Support will arrive in an over-the-air update in late January. It’ll add a Netflix home screen widget for easy access to the Netflix app, and firmware improvements to the phone’s screen and sound.

With today’s announcement, the Razer Phone joins something of an elite HDR club. According to Netflix’s support page, the LG G6 is the only Android smartphone that supports Dolby Vision, a standard of HDR, on Netflix. The LG V30, Galaxy Note 8, Xperia XZ Premium, and the Xperia XZ1, meanwhile, support other HDR flavors.

Alongside the Razer Phone’s support for Netflix HDR and surround sound content, Razer announced Project Linda, a laptop dock for the Razer Phone. It’s currently in prototype phase, but the company’s hoping to gauge consumer interest.
